ARIES POINT

The compositions for Aries Point combine not just two musical time periods, but present the special sound color of the gamba as an integral element in the composition. This special and unique sound influenced the compositional and improvisatory process and resulted in experiencing this sound in a completely new musical context. Its subtle intensity produces textures which inspired the improvising jazz musicians to discover expressive possibilities in new melodic and sound color explorations.

“Ever since my first musical meeting with the Hathor Consort, during two concerts in the Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent and the Festival Alba Nova in Belgium, I knew that the sound of the gamba and the harmonies en melodies of my compositions would beautifully compliment each other. The compositions for Aries Point combine not just two musical time periods, but present the special sound color of the gamba as an integral element in the composition. This special and unique sound influenced the compositional and improvisatory process and resulted in experiencing this sound in a completely new musical context. Its subtle intensity produces textures which inspired the improvising jazz musicians to discover expressive possibilities in new melodic and sound color explorations.

In jazz, you could call improvisation ‘Instant Composing.’ Variations on the theme of a piece and the interaction between the musicians play a central role. In the compositional process, new material was created by varying the motives through changing the order of the notes, the rhythm and the pitch and combining them with the principles of melody and harmony to create the piece. With Aries Point, I wanted to make the beauty and diversity of art, which has been the natural source of all musical expression for thousands of years, accessible again for a wider public.”
